Other Names:

Red sage

What is Danshen?

Danshen is part of the mint family and is a flowering plant native to China and Japan. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat heart and circulatory conditions. In traditional Chinese medicine danshen is known as ‘super grade herb’ due to its long use in treating these conditions.

Health Benefits:

Supports Heart Health

The traditional use for danshen is to support heart health. There is some scientific evidence to support this theory, as studies have found that it is able to promote blood circulation, reduce the risk of heart attack and improve symptoms of stroke.

Protects against some symptoms of diabetes

There are some studies to suggest that danshen could protect against some concerns associated with diabetes such as diabetic retinopathy – an eye disease that affects diabetes sufferers. This disease occurs when high blood sugar starts to damage the blood vessels in the retina.Powerful antioxidant

Danshen can effectively scavenge for free radicals and promote cellular defence activity, making it a powerful antioxidant – according to research. One particular free radical it can effectively protect against is peroxynitrite, which plays a role in the formation of disease.

Typical Uses:

You can find danshen in several forms, such as extracts, capsules, tablets and teas. There is no standard recommended dose for danshen, however we suggest taking 500mg to 2 grams of our Danshen / Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) Root Powder per day or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.
