Liquorice root is considered one of the world’s oldest herbal remedies, native to Western Asia and Southern Europe and has been used to treat various illnesses as well as flavour foods, drinks and medicines for years. Some of the traditional uses of liquorice include soothing an upset stomach, reduce inflammation and treat upper respiratory problems. Today it is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux, hot flashes, coughs and bacterial and viral infections.
The root contains many plant compounds, but its primary active compound is glycyrrhizin – which is responsible for the roots sweet taste, as well as its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Liquorice root is thought to be a natural antacid and often used to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as upset stomach, acid reflux and heartburn. It coats the digestive tract in mucus, protecting the stomach lining whilst speeding up its repair and restoring balance. Glycyrrhizic is a powerful anti-inflammatory that has been found to stop the growth of H pylori, a toxic bacteria responsible for many stomach issues.
One study shows that 50 adults taking a liquorice capsule twice daily showed significant improvements in indigestion, compared to a placebo. Another study of people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) showed a low dose of glycyrrhetinic acid in combination with standard treatment had a significant improvement in symptoms.May support respiratory health
