Tips for staying active during winter
When the days are short and the evenings are cold, curling up on the sofa with a hot chocolate and your favourite film sounds a lot more appealing than going for a run. This is why we have put together a list of tips to help you feel motivated to work out during the colder months, as exercise doesn’t only do you good physically; it also releases endorphins that help to improve your mood.
Don’t do it alone
Everything is more fun with a friend, exercise included. Whether it be going for a brisk walk with a friend or joining an exercise class at your local gym, exercising with company can make it seem like much less of a chore and instead something you enjoy.
Try to exercise outside during daylight hours
We know during the winter months sunlight doesn’t hang around for long, but getting outside for a brisk walk or jog at lunchtime can be more enjoyable – plus it means your exercise is done for the day before you even get home from work. Another bonus of exercising during the day is you’ll also get a little extra vitamin D (and we need as much of that as we can get during these months!)
Take on a challenge
Having a goal to work towards can really help keep you motivated, regardless of the time of year. Try the Couch to 5k or signing up to a charity event – this way you’ll benefit from the exercise whilst also raising money for a good cause!
Add some variety to your routine
Variety is the key to enjoying exercise. Switch up your routine every-so-often to keep things interesting – if you usually workout by yourself in the gym, try joining an exercise class. If running is your regular exercise, try doing some yoga at home instead.
Workout at home
Really can’t face the idea of going outside or getting your gym gear on? Workout at home in your pyjamas! Try finding a video to follow on YouTube or putting your favourite music on and dancing round the kitchen.
